The South Florida Dental Foundation was formed in 1989 as the East Coast Dental Society Foundation, as a way to raise funds to honor Dr. Robert L. Kaplan with a living legacy called the Robert L. Kaplan Visiting Professorship at the University of Florida. Since then, the Foundation has raised funds to help the community and local dentists in many ways. Following Miami's devastating 1992 Hurricane Andrew, the Foundation provided grants to member and non-member dentists who had lost their practices. In 1994, the Foundation raised funds to fly dentists and instruments to the US Naval Base at Guantanamo, Cuba, when 20,000 Cuban refugees were turned back. The Foundation also provided funding to the Miami Youth Museum, the IDEA program to train dental assistants through home study, and the Andrew Able Dental Scholarship, in memory of the son of an SFDDA member, Dr. Ronald Able. The foundation has also financially supported other worthwhile local dental projects, including the Miami Youth Museum’s “Dr. Smile’s Dental Office” hands-on exhibit, a dental hygiene scholarship at Broward Community College, gives funds annually to the May Van Sickle Dental Clinic sponsored by the Coral Gables Jr. Women’s Club and contributed initial funding for the IDEA program to train dental assistants through distant learning (home study) at Robert Morgan Vocational and Technical Institute. In 1994, a contribution was sent to the San Fernando Valley Dental Society Earthquake Relief Fund. The foundation was used as a conduit for funds collected on behalf of the Florida Dental Association’s Project: Dentists Care through silent auctions at the SFDDA's Dentist’s Day celebration in 1996 and 1997. Proceeds made it possible to transfer more than $9,000 to the FDA Foundation. Today, the SFDF supports programs such as Project Dentists Care, and financially assists Donated Dental Services, the May Van Sickle Clinic, Children's Dental Health Month, Give Kids a Smile, and a great many other charitable programs that provide oral health care to disabled and indigent patients.
